National Miners Museum — Immersive Projection in a Historic Space
Overview
Access AV were commissioned to deliver a bespoke projection system for the National Miners Museum in Dalkeith. The goal was to add dynamic visual content to one of the museum’s most distinctive exhibition spaces. To achieve this, we installed a 7,000 ANSI lumen Epson projector, which now displays immersive visuals onto a textured brick wall. The location, tucked into a tight corner of the main exhibit, blends industrial heritage with modern technology. This mix created both aesthetic and technical challenges for our engineering team.
Design & Installation Challenges
The unusual layout meant the projector had to be mounted directly onto a corrugated tin ceiling. No conventional mounting points were available. To ensure safety in a public space, our engineers dismantled part of the ceiling and installed timber battens into the roof structure. This provided a strong foundation for the projector mount while protecting the visual character of the room.
In addition, we installed a BrightSign media player for reliable playback. We also fitted discreet Biamp powered speakers, which add synchronised audio to support the visuals. Together, these components create an immersive experience for visitors.
Outcome
The finished system adds a striking new visual element to the exhibition. It enhances the storytelling within the museum while respecting its heritage setting. Staff now benefit from a system that is safe, reliable, and simple to operate.
This project demonstrates Access AV’s ability to design creative solutions in challenging environments. Even when traditional installation methods are not possible, we can engineer systems that combine modern AV technology with historic spaces.
